Steve’s Blog

Writing is a powerful tool to greater self-understanding, but it’s a lot more than that: It’s a way of life. In founding the Wellstone Center in the Redwoods in 2013, Steve and Sarah were drawn to the challenge of taking the inspiring calm and natural beauty of their little swath of land at the end of Amigo Road and sharing that with visitors to help them energize their lives. The hope was that others could leave feeling a little closer to nature – and to themselves – and carry that feeling forward. In his regular blog, Steve explores the mysteries of writing, and of inspiring other writers, and he also delves into the delicate balance required to think less and feel more, to be excited by life but not let stress or time sickness poison our sense of the moment. Steve’s Blog is an effort to start a dialogue, one we hope you’ll take part in regularly.

  • Steve’s Regular Blog: Bruce Bochy as Zen Master
Man is a thinking reed, but his great works are done when he is not calculating and thinking. D.T. Suzuki Less than a week after the San Francisco Giants won this year's World Series, I arrived at the Orlando Cepeda statue just outside of the Giants' ballpark in San Francisco. First off, there is the cultural arrogance of our…

  • Steve’s Weekly Blog: The Zen of Road Rage, Part I
According to epidemiological data, about one-third of the citizenry report committing road rage at one time or another. Psychiatry, June 2010 Picture the following scene: A picture-perfect stretch of the California coast, shortly after noon on Saturday, a small number of cars wending their way along Highway 1 toward Santa Cruz. But wait: A happy sight! A bride and groom are driving along in a small convertible with a large "Just married!" sign…

  • Steve’s Weekly Blog: Not Comfortable? Good!
Western culture has things a little backwards right now. We think that if we had every comfort available to us, we'd be happy. We equate comfort with happiness. And now we're so comfortable we're miserable. There's no struggle in our lives. No sense of adventure. We get in a car, we get in an elevator, it all comes easy. What I've found is that I'm never more alive than when I'm pushing and…

  • Steve’s Weekly Blog: One Word – Plastics
I love Los Angeles, and I love Hollywood. They're beautiful. Everybody's plastic, but I love plastic. I want to be plastic. Andy Warhol One of my first jobs growing up in San Jose was working the counter at the McDonald's down the street. I enjoyed the job and felt no shame about cheerfully inquiring "Fries or coke with that today?" or handing over a bag full of greasy junk food. I remember being…
