We’re now offering weeklong writing residencies for writers and journalists at the Wellstone Center in the Redwoods (rates and details below). Residents will stay in the Glass House, looking out on a grove of redwoods, a serene and peaceful environment ideal to make huge progress on a writing project. Residents take care of their own meals, with full access to our extensive kitchen.
Writing on the front page of the Santa Cruz Sentinel, Wallace Baine might have gone a tad overboard in saying that for a writer a residency here is “kind of like heaven” – but we enjoyed the thought.
We offer immersion in an environment of spectacular beauty sure to inspire any writer not only to find new directions to make progress with a writing project, but also a chance to pamper yourself with a break from many of the pointless distractions of day to day life. A visiting writer can enjoy many hours of solitude, either in the Glass House or on a walk on our private trails through the redwoods or elsewhere on our 4.7 acres of beautiful land, four miles up from the Pacific Ocean near Santa Cruz, California. Twice a week we have morning yoga and on Tuesday night visiting writers read from their writing project at OpenMic night.
To apply – or for more information – please write to Sarah@wellstoneredwoods.org Because of the high volume of requests we receive, we ask interested applicants to send us a short letter (200 to 300 words) explaining their interest and describing the writing project they wish to pursue, telling us about any published work they’d like to highlight – and including a sample of the work in progress (around 1,000 words, preferably).
The residencies run from Monday to Sunday and costs $350.
ABOUT THE WELLSTONE CENTER
Founded in 2012 by Sarah Ringler and Steve Kettmann, the Wellstone Center in the Redwoods was named to San Francisco Magazine‘s 2013 “Best of the Bay” issue for its weekend workshops. The Wellstone Center helps create the writers of tomorrow and helps free the writer living inside all of us. We do this by bringing people together in a tranquil and peaceful environment to provide them with new ideas and inspiration and also by publishing a select number of books through our Wellstone Books imprint. Through workshops, residencies and other activities, we seek to harness the potential in all of us toward greater empowerment and understanding of ourselves and our abilities, in harmony with nature and the environment, to help writers and artists and other creative people find new direction.
