Author Talk Series: Thad Nodine and Jonathan Franzen
Longtime Santa Cruz Sentinel arts columnist Wallace Baine has pointed to both Thad Nodine and Jonathan Franzen as key figures in the emergence of Santa Cruz in recent years as an area with a growing reputation for supporting writers. Nodine has lived in the community many years and Franzen, a more recent arrival, has kicked off his last two national book tours with Santa Cruz events. The two novelists also happen to be good friends and tennis partners.
They’ll be in conversation with Wellstone Center co-director Steve Kettmann, discussing friendship and the writing life, and how to encourage and inspire friends while also giving them creative distance. We’ll also discuss the work of both writers, the importance for a writer in living different places (Franzen, like Kettmann and WCR co-director Sarah Ringler, lived for a time in Berlin).
Nodine is the author of Touch and Go and a forthcoming novel set in California pot-growing country. Franzen’s novels include Strong Motion, the Corrections, Freedom and, most recently, Purity.
